Jan 1, 2013 - Rules Update

All 2013 rules are now posted.

Dec 31, 2012 - Tire Update

Due to unforseen circumstances I-25 Speedway will be returning to Hoosier for the track tire starting in 2013.  Track office received a call from Goodyear corporate a few weeks back stating that a decision was made to get out of tire sales for the short track industry all together. That being said changes will need to be implemented.   Track tire for the Super Late Models, 35's left side, 45's outside, 880's for modifieds, sportsman, and streetstock.  Mini stocks will return to sportsman tire.  Time lines for change over from Goodyear to Hoosier are as follows, Super Late Models and Grand American Modifieds by July 6th, all other classes have option to purchase Hoosier tires and or be exempt from change over for all of 2013.  Thank you and have a very Blessed New Year.  Randel and Perry White

Dec 22, 2012 - Tech Update

The complete and updated 2013 Rules will be available as soon as possible! However, there are some updates that we want to get out to you in the meantime.

Late Models: 2012-2013 pony car bodies will be allowed in the Super Late Model Division.   Tires will be marked before qualifying and will be required to be raced in all events for that particular evening.  If flat tires occur, competitor will be allowed to change damaged tire with approval of tech inspector.  Denver  CNS "spec" engines are allowed as an optional engine package.
Also, it was voted on by late model drivers that 18 degree heads will be accepted for racing in 2013 with total weight with driver at 3000lbs.  In 2014, all 18 degree heads will be banned from competition.

Grand American Modified: spline bars will be legal in 2013 as an option to slapper bars that were previously approved.

NOTE: The rule books are NOT YET updated on the website and will be posted as soon as they are available for posting. I will leave up the 2012 rules in the meantime in case you want to download them for reference. - mb

Sept 17, 2012 - Champions decided. by Mike Bible

Another racing season has ended at I-25 Speedway. 2012 is now “in the books”.  A big thank you goes out to all of the fans, drivers, crews and families for keeping short track racing alive and well in southern Colorado. I comment on this from a personal level as well. Without you all this sport would not be what it is. Your dedication and sportsmanship is greatly appreciated.

I’d like to let the fans in on just one example of what I mean by dedication. It’s something you can’t always see from the grandstands or viewing from one certain turn. See, racing is a lifestyle. A lifestyle that few exemplify better than the team of Steve Mills (Ryan McFadden driver) who goes all in and scrambles to change out a blown engine at the track when needed.  Another prime example is the many crews that burn the midnight oil all week to repair and prepare their racecars for Saturday night. They sacrifice precious time with their families and money to put on a show for all of us. Dedication is also the racer that has little to no help at the track and keeps persevering, and the families who chose to make financial sacrifices for the sport. We can’t forget the fans that clear their Saturday schedule, week after week to enjoy the greatest sport around.

The 2012 Champs were decided over the last two weeks. Ron O’Neil  (Super Late Model) and Aaron Paulsen(Grand American Modified) make it two years in a row for their titles. Joseph Andrade captures another Sportsman title by just 15 points. Cameron O’Lear deservingly wins the Street Stocks after a chaotic night. Mark Delany (Mini Stock), Sean Frank (Hornet) and Andrew Fisher (Charger Fig-8) who charged through a big impact in the last main event of the season, complete your champions list for 2012. What a great list of champions it is. As a V8 guy myself, I would have no qualms running side-by-side battling with any of these respected drivers, lap after lap.

It’s important to note that with a track such as ours, like many other short track facilities, it is indeed a community.  Those that succeed to enjoy the most of it, treat it as such… a community. While we are all very passionate about our racing, it seems that those getting the most out of it are actually “big picture” racing. In other words, it’s not just about this week’s race, but the next week… then the next week.  I’m saying that in a community it’s not just important THAT you won… it’s HOW you won, and how you competed. That's when victory is TRUE victory.

Remember when Reese Bobby said “If you’re not first, you’re last”? Well, clearly that didn’t work out the best for him or many others. We’ve seen a few drivers “self-destruct” with that mentality lately here at our track and it’s not pretty while they take out several others in the process. Maybe they won a race here and there, maybe not, but the one single thing we see in true champions is respect. Racing with respect is in everyones best interest. I for one have much respect for our 2012 champions. - mb

Sept 11, 2012 -Sept 15 - final countdown by Mike Bible

The next event is the final event of 2012 for I-25 Speedway – Sept.  15, 2012. The Champ’s of the Grand American Modifieds, Street Stocks, Sportsman, Mini Stocks and Hornets will be decided.  Only 8 points separate Street Stocks #16 O’lear and #96 of Cole Roberson with James Larsen and Bud Sopko right behind them.  The Hornets points are incredibly close as well. Can Aaron Paulsen (defending GAM Champ) hold on to his lead? What about Anthony Buckley and Jeff Larsen Jr. for 2nd and 3rd? Andrade in the Sportsman Lead… Delany in front of the Mini Stocks by just 26 points… are you kidding me? It’s going to be awesome!

In the final event for the Budweiser Super Late Models of 2012 (held on Sept 8, 2012), Ron O’Neil successfully defended his Budweiser Super Late Model Championship title. It’s been a trying year for the #0 car of O’Neil. The team has been searching for some “mojo” and that elusive one-tenth of a second or so. Add on a surging Chad Stutzman, Ryan McFadden and Rookie Aaron Paulsen and it’s plain to see that O’Neil had his hands full the last half of the 2012 season. This division is full of talented drivers and it showed on 2012. Aaron Paulsen captured the ROTY title for 2012 and 4th overall in the Late Models. Rick McComb is a notable as he and his crew have really stepped it up in 2012. Every event was a “dandy” and the skills of the majority of drivers were showcased this year. 2013 will prove to be an even more competitive year at I-25 Speedway for the Super Late Models.

Cory Seip nailed down his 2012 title for the Legends division. Rookie driver Ryan Jones captures 2nd in points standings as well as his ROTY crown. I-25 Speedway suits these cars to the “t” and the drivers love coming here. We look forward to 2013 with the Legends’ return. There are many talented up-and-comers to look forward to… Scott, Witherwax, Hondel, Jackson – just to name a few.

On another note… enough thanks can’t be expressed to “Circle Track magazine” and Amsoil for visiting I-25 Speedway last weekend on their  “Amsoil Great American Circle Track Tour”. Senior Technical Editor Bob Bolles was on hand to visit with fans and racers and discuss their racing experiences. We will talk more about this in a future commentary. In the meantime don’t forget to visit www.circletrack.com , the #1 source for advanced racing technology.  - mb

Aug 30, 2012 -Racing Returns by Mike Bible

Racing resumes on Saturday, September 8th, 2012. With only two events left in the 2012 season at I-25 Speedway, the intense points battles will be settled.  On Sept. 8th, the Champions of the Budweiser Super Late Models,  Hornets and Legends will be decided.
Current Budweiser Super Late Model champ Ron O’Neil will be defending his crown against Chad Stutzman who has been closing the gap rapidly with his series of wins and solid finishes. Aaron Paulsen is the leading Rookie of The Year contender for the Super Late Models.
With 7 top five main event finishes, Sean Frank leads Rebecca Simpson and Bryan Ford in the Hornet division. Eric Bowers leads the Rookie drivers thus far.
Cory Seip leads the Legends car points over rookie Ryan Jones who is definitely in striking-distance of the title. Following Jones is a 3-way tie for 3rd place. This should be interesting!

I-25 Speedway Drivers and Fans Make A Difference by Mike Bible

On Saturday, June 30th 2012, with the nearby Waldo Canyon fire still ablaze, many drivers took to the grandstands and pits with their helmets in hand. The goal: raise as much money as possible for the victims of the Waldo Canyon fire. The effort was conceived, spearheaded and organized by drivers Shelby Cortese, Blane Lujan and members of PoBoyz Racing via Facebook.  At intermission, dozens of drivers passed their helmets through the crowd of spectators for donations.

The drivers wish to thank all who participated and the wonderful fans who contributed. They were able to raise $885.00 for the cause, thanks to the generosity of the fans and fellow racers. The donations went to the Waldo Canyon Fire Fund which was set up by El Pomar and KOAA.

2nd Annual Garrett O'Neil Memorial - RECAP by Mike Bible

The Budweiser Super Late Models put on one heck of a show in their 75 lap main event.  Taking the track for the 2nd Annual Garrett O’Neil Memorial race, the thunder of these high-horsepower machines enveloped the entire crowd who were on their feet in anticipation. When the green flag dropped, the excitement filled the air as the cars raced in to the first turn. Side by side and nose to tail the racing was intense from beginning to end.  Jim Sikes, favorite of the big races, saw an opening and opened the door fairly early. Ron O’Neil, 2011 Track Champion, followed suit right behind Sikes to begin his pursuit of the $1500.00 winner’s prize.   It was anyone’s race at this point with Chad Stutzman, Kyle Shanahan and Aaron Paulsen proving to be early contenders as well.  In the heat of battle Shanahan’s #99 seemed to lose power and was forced to exit early. Aaron Paulsen’s #84 suffered a valve-train issue but was able to hang in there until the end.
The battle between #0 O’Neil and #14 Stutzman lasted all race long, all the while keeping the race leader, #83 of Sikes in their sights. Lap after lap Stutzman made a run on O’Neil, often getting a nose under O’Neil’s car. The battle was fierce to the end. Sikes in the lead, then O’Neil, Stutzman, Paulsen and Rick McComb running nose to tail at lap 70 and letting the chips fall for the final 5 laps. Desipte all of their efforts, that’s the way they finished the 2nd Annual Garrett O’Neil Memorial 75 lapper at I-25 Speedway.  If it were 80 laps… who knows? - mb

2nd Annual Garrett O'Neil Memorial by Mike Bible

This Saturday, June 9th, 2012 will be the 2nd Annual Garrett O'Neil Memorial, Budweiser Super Late Model -75 lap race at I-25 Speedway. Many of the best short track racers in the region will be on hand again to pilot their ground-pounding Super Late Model machines on the famed high banks in Pueblo, CO. Their challenge... 75 laps at break-neck speeds, driving door to door, unlike any other in Colorado. As if that weren't enough, the Sportsman cars return along with the Mini Stocks, Hornets and the always competitive Street Stocks.

The namesake of the event, Garrett O'Neil, was a bright young teenager who was lost way too soon in a non-racing related tragedy. Garrett was a racer through and through, that's for sure, with a bright future in whatever he chose to do, especially in racing. When speaking with his father, Ron O'Neil (2011 Budweiser Super Late Model Champion), anyone could feel the passion for the sport of auto racing that Garrett had. Eventual plans included Garrett assuming the driving duties of that same Super Late Model team. "This is what Garrett always wanted", said Ron O'Neil "So we're doing it for him and with him, he's always in our hearts". In my opinion race fans, THAT is passion. -mb
